Opening up the Queensland Rail Freight Market

Pacific National Queensland (PNQ) opened their Brisbane office in November 2003, and commenced revenue running of trains on 19th March 2005. Over $140 million is being invested in Queensland over a two-year period to support the expansion of Pacific National's rail freight operations into the narrow gauge network in Queensland.

PNQ's commencement of operations is an historic development within the open access environment that is now an integral part of the rail industry throughout Australia, and we believe the element of competition we are bringing to rail transport in Queensland will have significant benefits for the State.

PNQ made exciting progress in the first year of what is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to set up a Greenfield rail operation. The challenge has attracted a workforce of nearly 100 people, based in Brisbane, Rockhampton and Townsville, whose professionalism and commitment will play a key role in operating safely and efficiently, whilst maximising the fleet’s performance.
